Lamination is a mainstream surface finishing for paper boxes. A thin plastic film is covered on printed surface to improve scratch resistance, water resistance and durability. Gloss film and matte film are the two most common options.
Gloss film delivers shiny, reflective surface and makes printed colors brighter and more vivid. It fits designs with strong visual impact. The downside is fingerprints and scratches are easy to show, and strong reflection may cover printing details.
Matte film brings soft, non‑reflective premium touch, widely adopted by western brands. It creates minimalist luxury brand feeling. But colors will look slightly desaturated. Dark solid areas are vulnerable to minor scuffs, so strict production quality control is required.
Please note for EU shipments: standard PE lamination adds plastic layers, you need to consider PPWR recycling rules. Water‑based varnish is a good alternative if recyclability is required.
